No fewer than thirteen people lose their lives and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” stated the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the prior year. This project was closely associated with his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an accelerated pace, defying predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also sparked persistent concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party called for an prompt pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
